What we know
NASA's Applied Spaceflight Fabrication Facility (ASFF), also known as Building 70, is an approximately 37,625-square-foot high-bay industrial manufacturing and machine-shop building at Johnson Space Center in southeast Houston. The new facility will consolidate precision machining capabilities currently spread across multiple campus buildings to produce components for human spaceflight hardware. NASA and general contractor HITT Contracting announced groundbreaking on October 27, 2026. It is Phase 1A of the planned Engineering Directorate Consolidation Complex, with additional fabrication, high-bay, laboratory and office work contemplated in later phases. The $300 million figure cited in broader press coverage is a ceiling for NASA's campus-wide multiple-award construction contract, NOT this facility's construction cost. Building 70's own budget and completion date have not been confirmed in HITT's announcement.
